Advertising has changed.

In the past, you created a product, sold it on TV, then re-invested your earnings into more TV.  It worked and a lot of people got rich.

Now advertising has two challenges:

  1. Not capturing attention
    We use mute buttons and DVRs to avoid commercials we don't like.  You need to do more than GET someone's attention, you need to CAPTURE it.
  2. Splintered channels
    We have so many channels, stations, and alternative choices, it's challenging to reach as many people just with broadcast advertising.

The more advertising changes, the more it stays the same.

Though the strategies and tactics of advertising have changed, the purpose has not... spreading your ideas.  Your idea is like a seed. If it's a dandelion, it uses the air to find new soil.  If your idea is a tree, it might use a walnut to bury itself into nearby ground.  Either way, if your idea doesn't spread, it dies.
